A public register for stolen vehicles

A vehicle theft generates a crime reference number and very little else. The details rarely reach the people most likely to spot the car — the neighbours, the delivery drivers, the recovery trade, the person parked next to it three streets away.

Reports are public records: make, model, registration, colour, postcode and whatever identifying detail you add. Your name and email are not shown on the register — they are used to tie the report to your account and to notify you of updates.

Reports are public. Footage sent to us is not — it is stored privately, seen only by administrators, and deleted on a schedule. The privacy notice sets out what we hold and how to have it removed.

What should I do if my car is stolen in the UK?

Report it to the police straight away on 101, or 999 if the theft is in progress, and get a crime reference number. Tell your insurer. Then file a report on CarIntel so the make, model, registration and last known postcode are public and searchable, and people watching that area are alerted.

How do I check if a car has been reported stolen?

Search the CarIntel register by registration number, make, model, colour or postcode. Every report is public and free to view without an account. CarIntel is a community register and does not replace a police or HPI check, so treat a match as a reason to contact the police, not as proof.

Is CarIntel free?

Yes. Filing a report, searching the register, viewing the theft map and receiving area alerts are all free. There is no paywall and reports are never sold on.

Does CarIntel cover the whole of the UK?

Yes. Reports can be filed for any UK postcode. Stolen vehicles are routinely moved, stored and sold hundreds of miles from where they were taken, which is why the register is national rather than regional.

Is CarIntel connected to the police?

No. CarIntel is an independent community service and is not affiliated with any police force. Always report a theft to the police first, then file it here so more people can look out for the vehicle.

I think I have seen a stolen car. What should I do?

Do not approach the vehicle. If a crime is in progress call 999. Otherwise open the vehicle's record on CarIntel and log a sighting with where and when you saw it, and report it to the police on 101 quoting the registration.

How do stolen car alerts work?

Add your postcode to your CarIntel profile and choose a radius. When a vehicle is reported stolen within that area you receive an email with the details, so you know what to look out for locally.

If you run a neighbourhood group, a local news site, a forum or a page for the motor trade, linking to the register puts every report in front of the people most likely to spot a vehicle. Link to a specific page rather than the homepage where you can:

• your town's page, for example /areas/birmingham
• a make, for example /makes/ford
• an RSS feed of the latest reports, site-wide or per area and make, to republish automatically
